Chapter 36
Katie woke up anxious the next morning to find out how her father and Sue’s date went. She gets dressed and rushed out of the downstairs master suite. She and Mark moved down there as her father suggested so Katie would no have to walk up and down the stairs. Katie’s father moved to the upstairs room. Mark was already sitting drinking his coffee and reading one of the baby books. “Mark, have you seen Daddy yet?”
“No, I haven’t Hun but it sounds like Sue is in the kitchen cooking breakfast. Go ask her for details”
“How did you know that’s what I wanted?”
“That’s what all women want after a date, details. Could you get me a refill while you’re in there?” Katie took his coffee cup and rushed to the kitchen. “Good Morning Ms. Sue, um, oh I am sorry, Margaret. Where’s Sue?”
“Um, she called me last night and asked if I’d do breakfast this morning. That’s all I know.” Katie refilled Mark’s cup, “Oh, um, ok.”
“Mrs. Katie, I know you are on that special diet but do you eat with everyone else?”
“Yes Margaret that would be fine,” Katie answered as she left the kitchen. She rushed back to the couch and handed Mark his coffee, “Mark, I don’t think my father and Ms. Sue came home last night.”
“Katie don’t be silly. What do you mean?”
“Margaret is in the kitchen and when I asked where Sue was she said she called last night and asked Margaret if she’d do breakfast this morning.”
“Katie, maybe they went out to do something early this morning and wanted to catch Margaret last night. Maybe they just wanted to go on a sunrise walk or something. Don’t jump to conclusions. Besides, they are both adults so don’t get upset.”
“Mark, I am not upset. I think it’s sweet two people their age going out on a first date and staying out all night. I am happy for them. Although I don’t want to really think about what they were doing,” she said with a laugh.
Just after breakfast, John and Sue come walking in the front door. Mark was out working on the ranch and Katie was reading on the couch and didn’t hear them enter. “Hello Katie,” her father said. Katie put down her book, “Well, hello you two. Have you been out all night?” They looked at each other, then John spoke, “Not exactly. Where’s Mark. We have something to share.”
“He’s out working. I have a special ring on the bell for him to come if I need him. I’ll go ring the bell. Katie walked out to the porch and rang her ring for Mark. She remained out on the porch to wait for him. After a few minutes he rode up on his horse. “What is it K? Everything ok?”
“Yes, but Sue and Dad are back and want to talk to us both.”
“Uh oh. That doesn’t sound too good. Give me a second to put my horse up. I think Jeff or Hank is in the stable. I’ll have them rub him down. We just finished a hard run. I’ll be right in. Katie goes back in.” Her father sat on the couch and Ms. Sue Iwas in the kitchen talking to Margaret. “Daddy, what’s this all about?”
“Not until Mark is in here. Is he coming?”
“Yes he should be in a few minutes. He had to put his horse up. Man, something looks different about you. Are you sure everything is ok?”
“Katie, things couldn’t be better. I promise.” About that time Mark walked in. “Luckily Hank was in the stable and could give Coal Miner a rub down. So, Dad, what’s going on?”
“Hang on let Sue get back in here.” He hollered to the kitchen, “Sue, we are ready!” Sue and Margaret came in to the living room, both smiling from ear to ear. John gestured for Katie and Mark to sit on the couch. “Ok guys, we want to tell you something. It may come as a shock, it kinda did to us. So here goes. Mark, Katie last night Sue and I got… well, we decided to…Man, this is harder than I thought.”
Sue smiled, “John, just come out with it.”
John smiled “We got married!”
Katie and Mark sat in disbelief. Finally Mark stood up said, “Congratulations!” and hugged them both. Katie continued sitting there. He father finally sat down beside her.
“Katie? Are you ok? Talk to me.”
Katie looked at her father, “You actually did it. I can’t believe it. I am so happy for you.” She leaned over to hug her father. “Congratulations. I am glad you finally went and made yourself happy.” She stood up and gave Sue a hug. “I couldn’t have asked for a better step mom. I love you Sue”
“Thank you Katie. I love you as my own. I have asked Margaret to stay for a few days so your father and I can go have a few days to ourselves if that’s ok?”
“That would be great. Go and have a great time.”
Sue and John packed a suitcase and then left for a few days of privacy. No one at the ranch could really believe that they ran off and got married so quickly, but at the same time were very excited for them. Now Katie and Mark thought that building the cabin for Mr. Warren was even a greater priority so he and Sue would be able to live together on the ranch. Mark called Collin and told him that he’d pay him whatever he wanted in cash if he could have it done in a month. Collin agreed to work over time with his crews and have it done and ready to move into within in six weeks but that was the best he could do if Mark still wanted his quality. Mark agreed and they agreed on a payment to be paid in cash when it was finished. Until then John and Sue would stay in the extra master suite downstairs. Katie was regaining her strength and she would soon be able to move back upstairs.
The next morning was the day of Katie’s OB appointment. She would find out just how far along she was and hopefully get an approximate due date. Mark left Jeff in charge so he could go with her. They arrived at the doctor’s office just in time and they had very little wait to see the doctor. The nurse gave Katie a gown to change into and said the doctor would be right in. Katie put on the gown and she and Mark waited on the doctor. After just a few minutes he came in.
“Well, Katie, you have had a challenging few days. How are you feeling now?”
Katie replied, “I am feeling much better. More like myself but still get a bit tired at times.”
“Well, that’s to be expected. You will probably have that feeling for several more months. Dr. Brown from the ER filled me in on your condition. He sent me copies of your tests and reports. I have read over them and agree with what he asked you to do. I want you to continue the diet until I tell you otherwise. I am going to continue you on the extra vitamin supplements all through your pregnancy along with your regular prenatal vitamins. It seems what is happening is that your body is either sending all the vitamins and minerals it needs to the baby or is not absorbing them at all. This is not uncommon but we need to keep a close eye on it as it could cause other problems. Continue to take it easy for a few days. You may take short walks as you feel up to it but no working or riding. I know you do riding lessons several days. Give yourself another week off from that and then you may begin giving them but no more than an hour at a time. Space them out to give your body a rest. Here is a prescription for your new supplements. Start these tomorrow. Any questions?”
“No I think I have it all. Are you sure this is all common and is not harming the baby?”
“Yes it is more common than one might think. We will continue to do blood tests to see how your body is holding up. I will ask you to come back at the end of the week for a blood test. It won’t be a full appointment. You will just need to come in and have blood drawn. It should only take about 15 minutes, then we will call with the results. Don’t eat anything after midnight the night before and only drink water as needed. If you have morning sickness and must eat keep it to fruit of crackers. You can eat breakfast after we draw. Depending on the results, I will have it repeated in a week or two. That make sense?”
“Yes, I understand. Whatever is needed, I am here. Now what about my baby?”
Doctor Murphy laughed, “Oh yes you want to know that as well. Let’s get started.” The doctor moved Katie into position for an ultrasound. “Now, I suppose you want a few pictures if I can get some good ones. Won’t be able to see too much yet but I’ll get something for you to show off. Here we go.” He began the ultrasound. Pointing out what he to Mark and Katie. They were both mesmerized by the entire procedure. Mark reached down for Katie’s hand and they both had tears in their eyes. The doctor spoke, “Looks like you are just about 12 weeks Katie. So October 15 due date.” Mark and Katie smiled at each other. “Mark, she could be born on our anniversary,” Katie said. Mark smiled back through tears, “Yes, she could.” The doctor looked at them and laughed, “She? Got your guess already?” Katie smiled, “No doc, that’s what it is. There is no guess. We know for sure.” Doctor Murphy laughed, “Hey, don’t put me out of business. We’ll have to wait and see. I can tell you for sure in a few months. Let’s continue here.” The doctor continued with the ultrasound. “Here is the heartbeat. It’s good and strong. Wait!”
“What is it Doctor Murphy? Is something wrong with its heart?” Doctor Murphy remained silent for a minute. Then he took his hand and pushed on Katie’s stomach. “Katie can you turn this way just a little?” Katie turned as he motioned. “Yes, right there. See it?” Mark laughed, “Doc, we don’t know what we are looking at. What is it?”
“Well, it’s another heartbeat. It too is strong and healthy.” Mark almost fainted, “You mean there are two babies?” He squeezed Katie’s hand.
“Yes, looks like two healthy babies. No wonder you were having vitamin shortages. You had three people needing them. Do either of you have twins in your family?”
Katie answered, “Not that we know of. I know I don’t but Mark doesn’t know his real family lines.”
“Well, it’s possible that he does. Twins are usually passed down but not always. They could be fraternal but not sure. We probably won’t know until they are born.” Here I have got you several good pictures of both. I’ll print them off for you to have. We also have it on video if you want that.”
“Sure we’d love to. No one will believe it’s twins.”
“Ok, I’ll have it make a copy. Katie, I am going to have the nurse come in and draw some blood for other test. I will still need you to come in on Friday for a few minutes. We will make it first thing so you can get back and eat. Schedule that before you leave. Once the nurse is finished, you may get dressed and go and I will see you on Friday. If you have any questions please call or e-mail me.”
“Actually,” Katie says, “we have a list of questions here.” “Ok shoot.” Katie and Mark asked Doctor Murphy all the questions they wrote down this week. He patiently answered them all. After the last one Mark apologized, “Sorry about all the questions Doc. We just aren’t sure what to believe in those books.” Doctor Murphy laughed, “No that’s good. Sounds like you got some good books. Keep reading and keep the questions coming. That’s what I am here for.” They thanked him and said goodbye. The nurse came in to draw some blood and then told them they could go. Katie stopped at the desk to schedule her appointment for Friday.
As they drove back to the ranch, Katie and Mark discussed the thought of twins. They were so excited they couldn’t wait to tell everyone. Mark asked, “Do you think we should call your dad?”
“Well, I don’t want to disturb them but I really want to tell them. Let’s do it.” Katie answered as she pulled out her cell phone to call her father’s cell.
After a few rings he answered, “Hello Princess.”
“Hey Daddy, is Sue around? Mark and I have something to tell you.”
“Yeah hang on let me put it a speakerphone. She’s right here.”
Sue spoke, “Hello Katie, what’s up?”
“Well, I know how you two would fight over the new grandbaby, so Mark and I decided to give you both one so you don’t have to fight.”
In unison Sue and John yell, “TWINS?”
“Yes,” Katie says, “Twins, one for each of you and they should be here mid October.”
Katie’s father said, “That’s great Princess. What a true joy! We are so excited. Thank you for calling and telling us. We should be back in a few days and then we will help you celebrate.”
“Ok daddy. Y’all have fun and we will see you in a few days. Call and let us know when you are coming so we’ll be ready.” Katie hung up and she and Mark continued to talk about how excited John and Sue were. They couldn’t wait to tell everyone else.
When they arrived back at the ranch, Mark was ready to finally reveal his surprise to Katie. He took her upstairs to one of the smaller guestrooms right next to theirs. He had worked for the last several days turning it into a beautiful nursery for the baby. Katie loved it. It was decorated in soft colors and horses. It was perfect. He had everything: a crib, a changing center, and all the supplies the baby would need. “I’ll just need to buy another crib but it should fit right over there just fine. Over there next to the window is a rocking chair that I built myself out in the barn.” Katie was so surprised, she didn’t know he had done all of this work. The rocking chair was of course her favorite.
Chapter 37
Time moved right along and work went well on the Circle J Ranch. The cabin for John was finished right on time and he and Sue moved in and loved it. Katie’s pregnancy went well. She had no other problems and they continued to prepare for the twins. Doug stayed at the ranch most nights getting ready for the trial. He was excited about the twins as well but didn’t have much time to think about it with all the work on the trial. He worked night and day, especially as time for the trial drew near. Katie tired to stay out of things as much as she could to keep her stress level down. Mark made sure she continued on her doctor’s orders to kept stress down. Soon the day for the trial to begin had arrived.
Katie was now six months along and really beginning to show. As the judge took his place, he looked at Katie, “Well, Mrs. Dean, you look a little different than the last time I saw you. How are you feeling.”
“Very well your honor. I am 6 months along with twins.”
“Well, congratulations, Mrs. Dean. Hopefully we can get things wrapped up before those twins decide to make an appearance. So, let’s get started.”
The judge began the trial. Each side made their opening statement. The prosecution spoke how it would prove how Katie planned Billy’s death and hired someone on his team to kill him that day. The defense spoke how they would not only disprove the prosecution’s ideas but also prove that Katie had nothing to do with Billy’s death. The prosecution began their case first. They entered several pieces of evidence, mostly reports from the military and other documents that tied Katie to Billy’s death. They called several witnesses who testify how Billy was killed, how they believed Katie paid someone to kill him. The prosecution’s case lasted several weeks. Several times Katie got very angry at what they were saying and almost yelled out. Doug contained her and reminded her that they would get their shot. Finally, seventeen days into the trial, the prosecution wrapped up its case. It was now Doug’s turn to defend Katie. He too had several documents to enter into evidence. Several of his documents were the same as the prosecution but some of the information was different. He believed that someone had changed the information to have evidence point to Katie. Doug called several witnesses to the stand. First were Billy’s parents. They both testified that Katie had never seen the deed to the ranch and told the story of how they found it, cleaning out his room. They also told how Billy was killed before he and Katie were married so she did not know that they were going to give her the ranch.
Another witness that Doug called shocked everyone. “The Defense calls Brian Walker to the stand.” Katie almost fell out of her seat when Brian walked into the courtroom. She turned and looked at Mark sitting behind her who was also in shock. Doug began questioning Brian about Billy’s death and about some of the information he had told Katie. Everything he said was in direct dispute with the prosecution’s case. One main question that Brian answered was what actually happened when Billy was shot. He told the court the same story he told Katie. Doug asked him pint blank. “So you are saying that Major Miller pulled out his pistol and shot Lt. Jones in the chest?” Brain replied, “Yes, he did.” Doug continued, “What did the medic, Sgt. Clark, then say to Major Miller?” “He told him,” Brian continued, “to give him the shot. So Major Miller pulls a syringe out of his pack and gives it to Lt. Jones.”
“Is it common for someone other than a medic to carry such materials on the battle field?” Brain answered, “No one other than a medic is suppose to carry that stuff unless something happens to the medic. On occasion some guys will carry certain meds they might need but that’s about it.” Doug then asked, “Any idea what was in the syringe?”
“No, but I do know that Billy seemed to get really calm and then just stop right after.”
“By stop do you mean, pass away?”
“Yes, he took a deep breath and that was it.” Doug ended the questioning and leaned over to Katie who was crying.
On cross-exam the prosecution tried to discredit Brian by asking him about his interference in the case and being relived of his duties. They did not do a very good job in doing so because of the witty way Brian answered their questions. As Brian was stepped down Katie leaned over to Doug, “Where did you find him?” All Doug said was, “Ask your father.”
After a few more material witnesses, Doug finally closed his case. He felt like he had planted enough doubt that the jury would free Katie. The prosecution gave a very compelling closing statement summarizing all the evidence they had against Katie. Doug began his closing statement by showing the jury a picture of Katie and Billy that had been taken a few months before his death. He pointed out how happy they both seemed and the love on their faces. He reminded them of Brian’s testimony, that of Billy’s parents, and how they felt that Katie was not responsible. He finished by listing all the differences in the documents that both he and the prosecution had submitted. He then reminded them that if there was any doubt whatsoever, they had to find Katie not guilty.
With that, the case was put into the jury’s hands. They deliberated most of the afternoon. The trial was now into the fifth week. Everyone hoped the jury would quickly come to its decision. Just before 5 PM on the 32nd day of court after the trail began, it was announced that the jury had reached a verdict. Everyone was quickly ushered into the courtroom. The judge began, “Jury Chairman have you reached a verdict?” A man in his late forties stood up at the front end of the jury box, “Yes, we have your honor.” The judge continued, “Please hand your verdict to the bailiff so I may read it.” The chairman handed a piece of paper to the bailiff. The bailiff handed it to the judge, the judge read it silently and handed it back to the bailiff.
“Would the defendant please rise,” the judge said. Katie and Doug both stood up. Katie grabbed Doug’s hand and also reached back and grabbed
Mark’s hand. “Mr. Chairman,” the judge continued, “Please read your verdict to the court.”
The jury chairman rose and took the paper from the bailiff. He cleared his throat as he opened the paper. “We the jury, find the defendant, Kathrine Marie Dean, not guilty on all charges.” There was a collective sign of relief. Katie turned and hugged Doug and then hugged Mark. The judge spoke up, “Members of the jury, thank you for your service. Mrs. Dean is free to go. Court adjourned.” As soon as the judge pounded his gavel, there was a huge cheer from Mark, John, Sue and several others on Katie’s side. Doug shook hands with the prosecutor then joined in the celebration.
The next day for lunch they had a big community bar-b-que to celebrate several events. They were celebrating not only the verdict, but also the upcoming twins and the anniversary of the New Circle J Ranch. Mark and Katie decided that every year on the weekend of the anniversary of the opening, they would have a community wide celebration, and it would be open to everyone. The mayor of the town stood up, spoke and thanked Mark and Katie for all they had done for the town and presented them both with a key to the city. A spokesperson from the historical society officially announced that the Circle J Ranch would be a historical landmark for the county. Finally Mark and Katie announced that they were starting a new program for underprivileged children in the area. This program would allow children, no matter their finical status, to be able to come to the ranch for six weeks during the summer for Ranch Camp where they would learn to ride, rope, wrangler and all aspects of ranch life. Older teens could actually live and work on the Ranch through a special program with their schools. “These programs,” Katie announced, “will allow the history of ranching to be passed down so it can continue for generations to come.” The program would be set to begin the following summer once all the needed facilities were built.
Chapter 38
The day passed on the ranch, everything was moving right along, and business was great. The additions for the new programs were all falling into place. Summer soon turned into fall and the time for the twins to arrive was getting closer. Katie’s pregnancy went well. Then the day came.
It was October 17th. Just after breakfast Mark had to tend to a horse that had gotten sick. Katie was helping Sue and her father clear the breakfast dishes. Sue and John were in the kitchen washing the dishes while Katie retrieved the last few dishes from the table. Then Sue and John heard a crash. They ran into the other room. Katie had dropped several dishes and was sitting down holding her stomach in pain. Sue asked, “Katie, are you ok?”
“No, I think its time. My water just broke.”
Sue turned to John, “Go get Mark. I’ll help Katie to the truck and grab her bag.” John ran out and found Mark still in the stable. Mark rushed up just as Sue and Katie get out to the porch. He tossed John his truck keys. “Dad, pull my truck up right here to the porch.” John rushed to move the truck. Mark and Sue helped Katie down the steps of the porch then John and Mark helped her into the truck.
“We’ll follow in my car,” John said.
“Great, can you bring me a clean shirt? This one is horrible.”
“Sure will do. See you there.”
Mark rushed Katie to the hospital. They admitted her and Doctor Murphy soon came to check on her and said it should be too long. He turned to Mark, “You gonna be in the delivery room?” “Sure am Doc,” Mark answered proudly.
“OK well you need to come get ready. You can’t go in there like that.” Doctor Murphy took Mark to change. Just as they left, Sue and John come in. Katie repeated what the doctor said. Before long they took Katie to the delivery room. Mark remained beside her. Then at 3:15 PM on October 17th, The doctor said, “It’s a girl.” Mark cut the cord and the nurse took the baby to clean it up. Then a couple of minutes later, the Doctor said, “It’s a boy.”
Katie and Mark were ecstatic. “One of each, Hun,” Mark said and kissed her. The nurse came over and handed Katie the little girl. Katie said to her, “Hello Miss Elizabeth Rose Dean.” She of course was named after Katie’s mother Elizabeth Rose Warren. “Mark, she’s beautiful, she’s perfect.” Mark leaned down and kissed his daughter, “Yes she is.” The nurse then brought in the boy and laid him right beside his sister.
“Mark, we never had a boy’s name picked out. Any ideas?”
“Well, I thought about that the other day. I know you are and only child and thought that you might want to keep your maiden name going for your family’s sake, so I thought we could have that as his middle name.”
Katie smiled, “That’s a great idea. What about your middle name for his first name?”
Mark thought about it for a minute, “Nicholas Warren Dean. Sounds great. That’s it.”
They moved Katie into her room and Sue and John came in. Mark and Katie shared the names. They loved them. By the next morning, Katie, Mark and the twins were headed home. Everyone was glad to see them and enjoyed playing with the babies. After a few weeks, everyone loved the idea of having the babies around and couldn’t wait to spoil them at Christmas.
A few days before Christmas, everyone was sitting around the fire decorating the house when there was a knock at the door. Mark opened it, “Brian, what are you doing here?” Katie walked over to the door. “Brian come in. I haven’t seen you since the trial. What’s going on?”
“Katie, I need to talk to you. I need to tell you the truth. Mr. Warren, I am going to tell her everything.” Katie looked at her father who responded to Brian, “That’s fine. She needs to know.” Brian asked Katie if they could speak in her office and said Mark was welcome to join them. Mark, Katie and Brian all went into Katie’s office and sat down. “Thank you for your testimony at the trial. I never expected you to show up,” Katie stated.
“Yeah I know, your father convinced me. He knew I knew the truth.” Katie looked at him puzzled, “How do you know my father?”
“He was my lawyer when the Army relieved me of my duties for investigating Billy’s death. He tried to get me reinstated.”
“Wait, is your case the one that got my father in trouble?”
“Um, yes, I am afraid so. And then got him into more later.”
“What do you mean?” Brian took a deep breath. “I am not sure I should tell you all of this. But he tired to help me and he got into trouble, not so much because of what he did, but because of me. I tried to change documents. He didn’t know I did it I. tried to clear him but they blamed it all on him.”
Katie sat in disbelief. Brian continued, “When they pinned it on him, that’s when he got into trouble. They told him never to have contact with me again. Several months ago after you were charged, he contacted me for my testimony. That’s when they raised his fine and punishment and he lost everything. He didn’t tell you?”
Katie sat in disbelief and tears in her eyes, “No, he didn’t. He never would tell me details. So how’d you end of testifying for me?”
“Well, your father talked to a friend of his in the U.S. Attorney’s office who was reinvestigating my case. When I told them I knew the truth about Billy’s death, he asked me to tell him. I did and when he heard it, he agreed that if I would turn Government evidence and not only testify for you but also against the person really responsible they would reinstate me into the Army and even give me a promotion. So I agreed.”
Katie asked, “So you know the truth?”
“Yes, but I couldn’t tell you until after my trial and that’s why I am here. The trial ended yesterday.”
Katie says, “Brian I want to know the whole story.”
Brian took a deep breath, “It all began several months before our mission, right after Major Miller was put in charge of our mission. We were out one day and Billy kept talking about the ranch and how he couldn’t wait to get out and run the ranch. Major Miller soon became very interested in the ranch, asking Billy lots of questions. Billy didn’t know why, he thought Major Miller was a horse lover or something so Billy answered all his questions. He probably answered a few too many. To make a long story short, it seems Major Miller was stealing weapons from the military and selling them. He started small and then things seemed to pick up. He was looking for a place to use as a cover to sell the weapons. He thought the ranch would be the perfect cover. Billy didn’t know that at the time. Major Miller kept pushing Billy to sell him the ranch. He knew that if Billy knew the truth, he’d turn him in so he wanted to try to get Billy to sell him the ranch, especially after he found out how much it was worth. As our time to leave for the mission got closer, Billy overheard a phone conversation Major Miller was having. He heard him say something about the ranch being the perfect cover for selling the weapons. Billy decided to keep his eye on Major Miller and make sure he did nothing about the ranch being the perfect cover for selling the weapons. Billy decided to keep his eye on Major Miller and make sure he did not get the ranch. Just days before we were due to leave, Billy tried to find evidence to what Major Miller was doing. He snuck into the weapons depot. He was looking at some papers that had been altered. He was taking pictures of them when Major Miller walked in. He asked Billy if he found everything he needed. Major Miller tried to play it off but he knew that Billy would report what he found. The next day Billy tried to report it to the Base General. Unfortunately it was a busy week and no one was able to look into it for several days. By then we had already left on our mission.”
“They didn’t take it seriously when Billy first reported it and take him off the mission or something?” Katie asked.
“Well, normally they would. But that was a very busy week and most of the higher ups were out of their office that week doing other things because we had so many troops coming and going. By the time the right people got the word, our team had already left. Major Miller knew he had to do something or Billy would stop his entire operation. Sgt. Clark was also in on stealing the weapons. Major Miller and Sgt. Clark worked out a plan to kill Billy and make it look like the enemy did it. When I saw Major Miller shoot him, he knew I’d probably report it as well. So the day we returned, he had me relieved of my duties and had me followed. I tried to get out of it but knew my life was in danger. The trial and conviction might have actually saved my life. I think Major Miller would have had me killed as well. I knew of your father from Billy, so that’s why I called him. We tried to find the evidence on Major Miller and Sgt. Clark before I was caught and convicted, but it didn’t work. But as I said, it may have actually saved me. Your father was later able to find the evidence I needed. He got my conviction overturned and then I was able to testify against Major Miller and Sgt. Clark, the real men responsible for Billy’s death. Thanks to what your father did, my testimony and the evidence Billy found, Major Miller and Sgt. Clark were not only convicted of treason for selling U.S. weapons but also for Billy’s death.
Katie was in tears. She thanked Brian for all he had done. She told him that if there was anything she could do to help, she would. As Mark thanked Brian again and showed him out the door, Katie walked over to her father in the living room. She gave him a huge hug and simply said, “Thank you, Daddy.” She knew he had given up everything he had to help Katie. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Brian leaving and knew what she meant. “You’re welcome, Princess.”

Chapter 34 & 35
Chapter 34
Mark
and Mr. Warren helped Katie out of the truck and up the stairs to her
bedroom. Mark asked Mr. Warren to give Katie’s diet plan to Ms
Sue. “I’ll stay here and help her get comfortable. Ask Ms. Sue
to make her something simple for dinner. The doctor said eat light
tonight, but she does need something to give her strength. I’ll be
down in a few minutes to get the food.” Mr. Warren went down to
the kitchen and told Ms. Sue. “Everyone else already ate. You
guys must be staved. I saved you a plate if you want to eat. You
need to keep strength too.”
Mr.
Warren smiled, “Thank you for saving us some. I am not really that
hungry but I will eat. Do you mind if I eat in here so we can chat?”
She smiled, “Not at all. I’d love it. You can keep me company
while I fix Ms. Katie’s food. How is she? Is the baby ok?”
“She is pretty weak. They said the baby was fine for now as long
as she takes it easy. I don’t know why she continues to go out
there and work. She said herself it gets too hot. That’s how
Katie has always been, little miss stubborn. Just like her mother.”
“Yes
I’d agree with that. But you know John, if she’d not been that
stubborn, this place would not be the huge success it is. It was
hard at the beginning and most people would have given up. Katie
refused; she was determined to make it work. She made us all very
proud to be working for her. We know she won’t give up.” They
continued their conversation while Ms. Sue finished Katie’s dinner.
“Here, you want to take this up to her John? Tell Mr. Mark I’ll
have his dinner ready too. He needs to come down and eat.”
Mr.
Warren carried the food up and Mark helped Katie eat. “Ms. Sue
said for you to come down and eat too Mark. I’ll stay with her.
You go eat.”
“Thanks,
but I am not hungry. You guys just go ahead. I’ll stay here. She
needs me.”
Mr.
Warren took a deep breath, “Mark, she needs you to be strong and
you can only do that if you eat. Please go.” Mark looked at him
sternly, “Please don’t lecture me sir. I know she is your
daughter, but she is also my wife and that’s my baby she is
carrying. Nothing is more important than they are right now. Please
just let me be.” Mr. Warren almost spoke again but thought better
of it. He just turned and walked out of the room. Just before she
shuts the door, “I am here if you need anything.” He walked back
downstairs and told Ms. Sue his conversation. “He is as stubborn
as her sometimes. I’ll just take his plate up to him. I know he
won’t talk to me that way and he’ll eat. Could you finish
clearing the table John?”
“Sure
will Sue. Good luck with Mark though. I think this is all really
getting to him.” Sue carried Mark’s food up to the room, knocked
softly on the door and went inside. “Mark, I know you said you
weren’t hungry, but I was hoping you might eat a little so I
brought it to you. How is she?”
“She
is sleeping right now. She ate some and then took her medicine.
They gave her something to help her sleep. Ms. Sue, why is this
happening? She has been through so much.”
Sue
set the food on the table and sat down in a chair across from Mark.
“Mark, I don’t know why this is happening. God just sometimes
does things His own way but I do know that He knows better than us
and if He thinks this is best, than it is and as hard as that is to
understand, we have to accept it. Give her a day or so and she’ll
be fine. Now you eat and you both get some rest and we’ll see you
in the morning.”
“Thanks
Ms. Sue. Good night.”
Sue
went back down to finish cleaning up the kitchen. She and Mr. Warren
continued talking. After the kitchen was clean they went into the
living room and sat and talked for hours. They were having so much
fun talking that neither realized how late it is until the clock
struck midnight and Ms. Sue spoke up, “Gracious me. It’s
midnight. John, I have to get up early and start making breakfast.
I haven’t stayed up this late in years. I better get going. It’s
been great talking but I have got to get some sleep. Good Night.”
“Gosh,”
John said, “time does fly when you are in good company. Good night
Sue. Sleep well,” he said as he kissed her on the cheek. Sue just
smiled and walked to her room. Mr. Warren sat down and finished his
cup of coffee. He thought about Katie. He realized he needs to pray
for her but he had not prayed in years. He and his family were very
active in church. In fact, he was an elder and Katie’s mother
helped with Sunday school. But when Katie’s mother was killed, Mr.
Warren gave up on church and hadn’t been involved since. He never
understood why a loving God would take his wife away at such a young
age and leave him all alone to raise a little girl. He had forgotten
how to pray. He decided he’d just say what was on his heart.
“God, if you are still up there, I am sorry that I gave up on you.
I realize that sometimes things just happen. I know that your plans
are always better than ours. God, thank you for continuing to love
me even when I gave up on you. Thank you for allowing Katie and Mark
to have such great faith in you and to openly share that with others.
Father, please help Katie right now. She needs you in so many ways.
Please help her get strong and be able to continue to carry that
little life inside her. Father, help me be able to understand and
help her and Mark where they need it. Help Mark stay the strong
stable force that Katie needs. Be with the entire situation and the
trial. God, there is just so much I feel I need to say after so many
years of leaving you out. I don’t want to leave you out any more.
Help me be the person you want me to be and come back fully to you.
Father, I am sorry. Please forgive me.” Mr. Warren fell on his
knees by the couch and began crying. He realized God had been with
him the whole time and that all he needed to do was ask for His help
and strength. He decided that from that moment on, he’d have a new
perspective and be a better person. He climbed into bed about 1 am.
He went to sleep just remembering all the songs he used to sing in
church. He sung himself to sleep that night, with a smile on his
face and a new song in his heart.
He
woke up the next morning as the rooster crowed. He had a new leash
on life. As soon as he got up, he had a smile on his face and began
whistling. He came out to the living room and to his surprise, saw
Katie sitting on the couch. “Good morning Princess. How do you
feel?” he asked as he leaned down and kissed her head.
“Better.
I had a good night’s sleep. Why are you in such a good mood this
morning?”
Mr.
Warren sat down beside her. “Katie something happened last night.
I prayed for the first time since your mother died. I just poured my
heart out to God. Katie, not only did He hear me, but also He
reminded me that He has been there all along. He reminded me of His
never ending love and He put a new song in my heart and gave me a
brand new start.”
Katie
smiled at her father, surprised at what she just heard, “Wow!
That’s awesome Daddy. Mark and I have been praying for you. He
will be excited to hear this and so will Ms. Sue.”
Mr.
Warren smiled, “Speaking of which where is Mark and Ms Sue? I
want to share it with them.”
“Mark,
is up taking a shower and you know where Ms. Sue is so go on. I am
going to sit here and read while I wait for Mark.” Mr. Warren
kissed Katie’s cheek and walked into the kitchen whistling one of
his favorite old hymns. As he opened the door he heard Ms. Sue
singing the same song. They looked at each other and Ms. Sue spoke,
“Sounds like we both got the same song this morning. You know I
haven’t sang that song in years but I woke up this morning and it
just came to my mind and now I can’t get it out.”
Mr.
Warren just smiled. “That’s kinda what happened to me. I have
to tell you what happened after you left last night.” As Sue
continued to make breakfast, Mr. Warren told her the story. She was
so excited she flung the eggs across the room. They laughed as they
both cleaned it up and washed their hands in the sink. Standing
there, Mr. Warren looked deeply into Sue’s eyes. “Sue, do you
think God is trying to tell us something by giving us both the same
song this morning? I mean.” She interrupts him, “John, I don’t
believe in coincidence. There is a reason and I also believe He has
brought us together for a reason. We just need to take time to
figure that out.” Mr. Warren took Sue’s hands in his, “Sue,
thank you for helping me find God again. You may not know it, but
you just being here and being you was a true turning point and for
that I am truly grateful.” Sue smiled and hugged him, “John you
are so welcome. Thank you for listening to God.” They continue to
embrace until Sue’s eggs started to burn. “Gracious my eggs!”
she hollered as they released their embrace. “Now I have to start
them all over. Breakfast will be late now.” She looked at Mr.
Warren and smiled, “but it was well worth it.” Mr. Warren
smiled, “I’ll go set the table while you finish.” He grabbed
the plates and set the table. Sue began singing the song again and
Mr. Warren began whistling again.
By
the time he finished setting the table, breakfast was ready. He
helped Sue carry the food to the table and while she rang the bell.
When she returned she saw Katie sitting with Mark on the couch.
“Mrs. Katie, are you ready for your breakfast now? I have it
ready.” “Sure Ms. Sue,” Katie replied. Just put it at my
place on the table. I am going to try to sit there and eat.” Mark
helped Katie up and walk to the table. As they ate Mr. Warren told
Mark about what happened the night before. The ranch crew strolled
in one by one, ate and went back out to work. Mark was excited about
Mr. Warren’s experience. Mark also apologized for what he said to
Mr. Warren the night before. Mr. Warren replied, “Don’t worry
about it Mark. It may have actually helped me. Anyway, can we talk
seriously for a bit? I have something I’d like to run by you.”
Mark
and Katie looked at each other. “Sure daddy,” Katie said. “Is
there something wrong?”
“No
nothings wrong. I just have sort of a proposition for you.”
“Um,
ok shoot, what is it?”
“Well,
you know that I need a new place. I really like it here but don’t
want to be a burden to you guys. At the same time Sue and I are
getting along nicely. Hopefully that will continue and I would love
to be here and see my grandchild grow up. So I was wondering if we
could work out something. I want to maybe build me a little house on
one of your back acres and live back there. We’d all still have
our privacy but be close together. I was hoping we could work out a
deal for payment or even work it off. Now I know it’s a lot to
ask, but I’d work hard to pay you back. What do you think?”
Mark
and Katie smiled and look at each other. Mark got up and stepped
into the office. Katie said, “Daddy, this experience really has
changed you. I never would have thought you’d actually ask for
help.”
“Katie,
God really changed me. He showed me that we can’t do it alone and
that we need to put aside our pride sometimes. This is the first big
step for me in making a change.” As he spoke Mark returned with a
large piece of paper and set it in front of Mr. Warren. “ What’s
this?” Mr. Warren asked.
Mark
said, “It’s your new house.”
“What?
My new house what do you mean?” Mark told him how they were
planning to build him the house. Mr. Warren stared at the plans in
disbelief. He began to cry.
“Guys,
I don’t know how to thank you. This is great. I don’t know what
to say.”
“Daddy,”
Katie says, “just having you here will be enough. Besides we want
to do it. Now let’s look at the plans and if there is something
you want to change or add, we can let Collin know while there is
still time.”
“Wait
do you mean Collin Henderson from Henderson Custom Homes?”
“Yes, that’s the
one. He is a good friend of Mark’s. Why? Do you know him?”
“Wow!” Mr.
Warren cried. “I don’t now him personally but your mother and I
always dreamed of having one of his homes. We knew his company when
his father owned it. He was a friend of your mother’s from high
school. We never could afford to have one built but he’d come out
every once in awhile when business was slow and show us all the new
features and help us dream. I never thought I’d be able to afford
one. You guys, it’s too much. I can’t let you lay that kind of
money out for me.”
“Mr.
Warren,” Mark said. “I assure you that absolutely no money will
exchange hands for this house. Collin and I are kind of doing an
exchange and that’s all you need to know. Now let’s look at the
plans and make any changes so I can let Collin know today.”
They
sat and talked about the house. Ms. Sue even helped out while she is
cleared the table. Of course Mr. Warren asked for her input on some
parts and she just smiled and said what she thought. The house
remained pretty much as Katie and Mark designed but with a few
changes that Mr. Warren made. Mark left to call Collin and tell him
of the changes while Mr. Warren helped Katie to the couch. “Katie,
why don’t you and Mark move to the downstairs suite until you get
your strength back. You don’t need to be going up and down those
stairs. I’ll move into another guestroom upstairs until you are
better. It’s no big deal. Doug will be back next week and we will
both be up there.” “Thank you Daddy. That’s sweet. I think
it is a good idea and am sure Mark would as well. He has been
carrying me up and down the stairs. That would make it much easier
on him, if you are sure you don’t mind.”
“Of
course I don’t mind. It’s the least I can do. Also, I was
thinking that Ms. Sue and I could postpone our dinner tomorrow night
and stay here for you.”
“Daddy,
I wouldn’t hear of it. You go on out and have a good time. Mark
will be here and Ms. Sue has called her Cousin Margaret to fill in
for her. It will be fine. Margaret has helped out around here
several times when we have had big events or needed help. She knows
her way around. Now you two go out and have a great time. As a
matter of fact, you better call the flower shop and place your order.
They are pretty busy on weekends. I’d do something nice, maybe
not all daisies but have at least one in it or something.”
“Well
I was thinking about a single rose with a daisy. What do you think?”
“She’ll
love it. Go in the office after Mark is finished talking to Collin
and call the flower shop so it will be ready for you to pick up
tomorrow.”
Just then Mark came
out of the office, “Collin said those changes would be easy and no
problem. He did want to talk to you Mr. Warren about some colors
when he gets to that point.”
“Ok
great. I can’t wait. Mark, don’t you think it’s about time
you call me Dad? It’s been long enough with this Mr. Warren
stuff.” Mark smiled, “Sure Dad. I can do that.” Mr. Warren
smiled as he walked into the office to call the flower shop. Just
then Hank came running through the door.
“Ms.
Katie, I just heard what happened are you ok?” “I am better. So
how was your date last night?” Katie asked with a smile.
“Well,
it was great. We had a great time. Dinner was wonderful. We just
talked and got to know each other without Mandy constantly wanting to
interrupt. The concert was fun. We felt like kids again. We never
ran out of stuff to talk about. I always worry about that. Are you
sure you are ok?”
“Hank,
I am fine or at least will be. Just need to take it easy and get my
strength back. So did you ask her out again?”
Hank
smiled, “Actually yes. We are going out again tomorrow. Katie, I
know this may seem early but I really think I love her. I just don’t
know if she is ready for a commitment. She talked some last night
about her ex’ and I could really tell she was still bothered by
what happened. I just don’t know how to approach that topic.”
“Hank,
just be patient with her. You remember how Mark was with me. He
knew a long time before I was ready that he wanted to make a
commitment. He was patient. He gave me the time I needed to get
over Billy and put that all behind me. Then one day I finally
realized it too. That made all the difference. Just knowing how
patient he had been all that time made me love him even more. Karen
will be the same with you. Just give her time and let things flow
naturally. When I talked to her about asking you to the concert,
that was one thing that came up. She was worried that she was not
completely over Mandy’s father. I told her that if she wanted to
take you to the concert not to let the past ruin it. I also said
that at the same time, she needed to be patient and let things take
the course they will. If you both do that, it’s only a matter of
time before you both will be ready to move on. Just be patient.”
Hank
listened to everything Katie said, “Wow! You really know your
stuff. You are great. Don’t you have a degree in counseling?”
Katie
laughed, “Kinda. My undergrad is in counseling psychology. I
wanted to go to grad school after Billy got out of the army and get
my Master’s in family counseling but never got back to it after he
was killed. Now I have the ranch to run.” Hank looked at her,
“You should really think about going back. I think you would be
wonderful. You could have your own little office. Thanks again,”
Hank said as he went back to work.
“He’s
right you know,” Mark said from the office doorway and startled
Katie. “You should think about it. You are great at it.”
Katie
looked at him, “Yeah but what about the ranch? I am needed here.”
“K,”
Mark said sitting down beside her, “the ranch will be fine. If
it’s something you want to do, you should. Besides, I can run the
ranch and your father can take over the books and office work like we
talked about. Then you could go back to school and start a
practice.”
“Mark,
with the baby, I am not sure it’s such a good idea.”
“Katie, I am not saying enroll tomorrow. Think about it while
you’re taking in easy and do research. After the baby comes, we can
discuss it and move forward if you want, but I do think you should
think about because you are wonderful.” Katie agreed to think
about and do research as she could. That was always a dream of hers
and it would be great to achieve that dream after all. She could do
riding lessons on the side and either have an office on the ranch or
even one just in town since it was only about 15 minutes away.
Chapter 35
By
Sunday afternoon, Katie is felt much better. She could finally get
around the house on her own and didn’t have someone constantly
watching her. She was still taking it easy, staying in the house
catching up on paperwork and other things that needed to be done.
She either had to cancel riding lessons or sometimes has Mark or Hank
do them for her if the student is advanced enough. They couldn’t
really take the time to show basics to the younger or newer students.
She did sometimes sit out on the porch, watching and shouting
instructions.
After
lunch her father asked her if she felt up to going on a short walk.
She thought it would be nice to get out of the house. So she agreed
but only for a short one. They took off down the trail toward the
pond. They walked for awhile in silence. Finally Mr. Warren spoke,
“Katie, what do you think about this thing with Sue?”
“Daddy,
I think it is wonderful. You guys both need someone and you got it
in each other.”
“Katie,”
he sighed. “That’s not what I mean. I mean would you be fine if
things progressed? I know it might be hard seeing me with someone
other than your mother. I don’t want to pursue things if your
aren’t comfortable with it.”
Katie
stopped walking and looked directly at her father, “Daddy, I want
you to be happy. If Ms. Sue makes you happy then go for it. I
almost think of Ms. Sue as a mother. She and I have had lots of
talks over the time I have been here. She is wonderful. I know that
one reason you may not have gotten into such relationships in the
past is because you were worried about how I feel. Mom has been gone
for a long time and in that time you have spent most of your life
making me happy and providing for me. Daddy, I want you to be happy.
It’s time you did something for yourself. I give you my blessing
to make that happen.”
Mr.
Warren just smiled, “Katie, you are just like your mother. She
would be so proud of the woman you have become. I only wish she were
still here to see it. I know she is up in Heaven smiling right now
saying, ‘That’s my girl.’” They hugged and walked back to the
house. Katie asked her father to come into the office when they get
back. Katie began showing him some of the inner workings of the
ranch. “Mark and I were kinda hoping you’d be willing to take
over some of this stuff for us. That could be part of your help
around here and paying for your up keep,” she said with a smile.
He looked through some of the paperwork and books that Katie kept.
“I am impressed Katherine. You have done a wonderful job at this.
I certainly taught you well. I would be happy to take care of some
of this for you but don’t think I am gonna me calling you boss.”
They both laughed and Katie showed him where she kept everything that
he might need.
“Mark,
knows things in here to so if you have any questions and I am not
around, he can help you. Jeff knows some too but he usually tries to
steer clear. He says it gives him a headache.” They sat and
discussed some of the work for awhile. “Daddy, its almost 4. You
better get to the flower shop before it closes and get back here and
get ready for your date.”
Mr. Warren smiled, “You’re right. We can do this later. Can you
call the shop and tell them I am on my way?” Katie picked up the
phone as he left.
He
got to the shop just before closing. They said Katie called and they
were waiting on him. He thanked them, took the flowers and left. He
rushed back to the ranch to get ready. He decided to surprise Sue
and wear some of his new “cowboy” duds. He picked out a nice
pair of jeans and his favorite button down. He put on his new boots
and even a cowboy hat. He was splashing on his cologne when Katie
knocked on his door. “Looking sharp cowboy. It’s odd seeing you
dressed like that. I like it.”
He
smiled, “Question is, will Sue like it?”
“Daddy
she’s gonna fall over when she sees you all decked out. She told
me several months ago that she had a dream about a handsome cowboy
knocking on that back kitchen door with flowers in his hand and
sweeping her off her feet.”
He
smiled, “Well, I don’t know about the sweeping her off her feet
part, but I was planning on going to the back door to pick her up.”
“That’s
a great idea. Have fun and don’t keep her out too late,” she
said as he walked by her and out the door with flowers in his hand.
Right
at 6 he knocked on the back door. Ms. Sue answered wearing a nice
dress. “My My Ms. Sue, you do look beautiful this evening. These
are for you.”
She
took the flowers as he walked in the door. “Thank you John. You
look nice. I like your new look. It fits you.” She put the
flowers in some water.
“Ready
to go?” John asked.
“Sure
am. I have been looking forward to this since you asked me.” John
offered his arm and he escorted Sue to his car. He opened the door
for her and then closed it after making sure she was safely in. He
smiled as he stepped into the car and drove to town. Ms. Sue was
surprised when he drove right through town. “We not going
somewhere in town?”
John
smiled, “No, I am taking you to a little place I know of in the
next town over. I am not familiar with things around here. I use to
take Katie to this place on our father daughter date nights. It’s
great.”
After
a few more minutes they finally pulled in. Sue soon realized this
just isn’t a restaurant. “John, what kinda place is this?
“It’s
a fun place. They have really good food and in the back is a big
dance hall. I thought that if you were up to it we could do some
country line dancing after dinner. Tonight is beginners’ night
where they kinda teach you all the dances and then they have a free
dance time for couples and such. What do you say?”
“I
haven’t been dancing since I was in my 20’s. I use to love it.
I always wanted to get back to it. Let’s go.” John was glad he
picked something that she would like. They talked a lot during
dinner. They talked about what they both wanted out of their life.
They talked about Katie and the upcoming baby. Sue said, “I hope
you don’t mind but I kinda look at Katie as my daughter so I see
this as my grandchild too. I figure it needs to have a grandmother
since Mark’s parents are no longer around. Is it ok if I call her
mine and the baby mine as well?”
John
smiled and took Sue’s hand, “I think it is a great idea. Maybe
one day we could make it official.”
“What
do you mean John?” Sue asked.
“Well
I just meant if things continue to go well then maybe we could make
it official.”
“You
mean get married?”
“Well
if it comes to that and you’d like to,” John said.
Sue
looked at him, “John, I am not sure how you would take this but
you know, we both have a lot of years behind us. I have always been
one to give it to you straight. So here it is.” John gulped. He
wasn’t sure what was coming. He thought his comment had upset Sue
and that there was no chance of pursuing a relationship now. Sue
continued, “Honestly John, I’d marry you right now if you asked
me and we found someone to do it. I really feel that after the other
night and what happened to you and our singing the same song, well, I
knew right then that we were meant to be together. I don’t know
how I know but I just felt God strike me right then and there, as if
to say, here he is Sue grab him and don’t let go. I have never
been so sure of anything in my life and we are talking about 40 plus
years here. I know this might not be the right time to say it but I
felt if I didn’t, I’d just burst.” John sat there in shock.
He didn’t know what to say. He took a drink of his tea, thinking
to himself, is this woman crazy? Am I crazy? What’s going on.
Then he looked at his watch.
“Well
we’ve still got time. I know the justice of the peace and he
should be at home right now. He’d do it.” John said this almost
jokingly just to see if Sue was serious. He also knew that it would
one day happen and that God had brought them together but wasn’t
sure this was the right time.
Sue
looked at him, “Really he would? What about rings? Don’t we
have to have rings?,” she asked with a smile.
John
thought for a minute before speaking, “Slow down Sue. Are you
really serious about this? I mean I would love to marry you but
don’t you think this is a little fast. I can make it happen if you
want, but we have only really gotten to know each other the past week
or so. Are you sure?”
Sue
thought for a minute. “John, I am sure. I don’t know what it is
but I just know that I can’t go another day without marrying you.
The other night when we stayed up talking, it was the hardest things
I had to do to leave you sitting there. Then you told me the next
morning what happened and I knew there was a reason. I have spent my
time since in prayer. I had these feelings about you that would not
go away. Feelings I have had for no other man. I prayed for God to
either take them away or to have an opportunity to have our
relationship move forward quickly. He is giving us a wonderful
opportunity. I feel in my heart this is what we are to do. I spent
the two hours before our date asking God to show us where he wants
this relationship to go. Just before you knocked on my door and
while I was still praying this, a song came on the radio. It was a
country song. I haven’t heard called, ‘Will you marry me?’
The song ended and on the very last beat you knocked. As I said I
don’t believe in coincidence, I believe it was from God. I don’t
know why it seems He wants it to happen so quickly, but He does.”
As
soon as Sue finished, John pulled out his cell phone, “Sue I’ll
be right back.” He wandered to where Sue could still she him but
could not hear what he was saying. After a few minutes he returned
and held out his hand, “Come with me.” Sue took his hand and he
led her back to the car. After he got in, they drove to another part
of the town. He drive to a small jewelry store on the corner, “Come
on.” They got out and the owner greeted them at the door. “Hey
John, come on in.”
“Thanks
Thomas for doing this. I owe you big time.”
He
ushered them to a section of the counter, “No problem, I was in the
back doing some inventory and was going to be here anyway. Now do
you want just the bands or do you want a diamond as well?”
John
turned to look at Sue, “It’s up to her.”
Sue
was still in shock stuttered, “John, you can’t be serious. I
choose?”
“Yes,
anything you want. You look and I will make a quick phone call.”
Thomas
first pulled out a rack of diamond engagement rings for Sue to see at
and then wedding bands. She found several she liked. John was
standing on the other side of the store making a phone call and
didn’t hear them talking. Sue really wanted an engagement ring but
doesn’t want John to have to buy one. She knew he was on a tight
budget right now. Before he comes back she finally decided on just
matching bands. Thomas could tell she really wanted a diamond but
didn’t say anything. When John paid for the bands, Sue continued
to look at the diamond rings. There was one Thomas could tell she
just loved. John saw her looking at them and leaned in to talk to
Thomas so Sue couldn’t hear him. “Thomas, she wants a diamond
doesn’t she? And she feels bad about asking me for it doesn’t
she?”
Thomas
softly answered as he swiped John’s card, “Yes, she does. There
was one she just loved.”
“Thomas,
do you think you could give me the same deal we talked about? I know
it’s a lot to ask.”
“John,
we have been friends since high school. I’d do anything for you.
I’ll give you the same deal. I sized her while she was looking.
The band just happened to be her size. The diamond she really wanted
is a size too big. I’ll resize it and you can pick it up tomorrow
after lunch. Our same deal.”
John
shook his hand. “Thomas you are a true friend. Thank you.”
John collected the bag with the ring boxes in it. “Sue, we better
go. The Justice of the Peace is waiting on us.” Sue smiled and
grabbed John’s hand as they left the store.
The
ceremony was very simple. John loved the rings that Sue selected.
They said their vows, exchanged rings and kissed for the first time.
They were both surprised as they kissed. It was odd having the first
kiss be as husband and wife, but it was special at the same time.
John thanked his friend, the Justice of the Peace. They made small
talk and then John and Sue left hand in hand. They decided to go
back to the dance hall and celebrate. As they drove Ms Sue spoke up,
“So how do you think Katie will react?”
John
snapped his head around and stopped the car, “Oh my Gosh. I didn’t
even think about that. How are we going to tell her? Wait, we can’t
spend our wedding night at the ranch. It would be way too odd. Do
you think Margaret could cover for you till morning?”
Sue
thought, “I am sure she could but I’d need to call her. Can I use
your phone?”
John
hands her the phone, “You can tell her why but tell her not to tell
anyone, please,” John said as she dialed the number. Sue spoke to
Margaret and asked her not to tell anyone. Margaret agreed to not
only stay until they returned but also not to say anything. Sue hung
up, “Done.”
John smiled, “Ok Mrs. Sue Warren. We will just find a room here in
town for the night,” he continued driving. “I know a good place
on the way back to the dance hall. We can stop there before we go
dancing.” Sue smiled, “Mrs. Sue Warren, I like the sound of
that. This is going to take some getting use to.”
They spent several hours at the dance hall. They had so much fun
dancing, laughing, and cutting up. Everyone at the dance hall really
enjoyed them being there as well. One of the dance instructors asked
them if they’d like to join her regular Sunday evening couples’
class. They agreed and shared the news with her that they had just
gotten married about an hour earlier. The instructor proceeded to
announce it to everyone in the hall and they all joined in a big
celebration that went on until about 11 PM when most everyone had
gone home. John spoke to the instructor and said they’d try to be
back next week but if not would be back as soon as they could. She
thanked them and congratulated them again as they left.
They were so tired when they got back to their hotel. John was glad
they had so much fun. He never thought when this night started that
Sue would have so much fun let alone become his wife. He was happy.
He had never been this happy since Katie’s mother. He knew what
Katie had told him was right. He’d spent so much time making
others happy, he’d forgotten about his own happiness. Now he and
Sue would be happy together.

Chapter 32 &33
Chapter 32
Katie woke up refreshed and renewed after getting a good night sleep in her own bed with Mark at her side. Mark was already up and downstairs when she awoke. She hurriedly got ready and went down to greet him. “Morning Mommy,” Mark said as she came down the stairs.
“Morning Daddy,” Katie said with a smile as she went to sit down on the couch beside him. Mark was reading and drinking his coffee. They kissed and Katie asked him, “Where’s my cup?”
“Well, you get a very special cup. You see I read in this book that pregnant women aren’t supposed to drink coffee or have caffeine. So, you get juice this morning, but I had Sue put it in your favorite coffee cup so you’d have the illusion that it was coffee.”
“Mark, where did you get that book and what on earth makes you think I can go without coffee or that I’d think this was coffee just because it’s in my coffee cup?”
“Easy hun, it was just a joke. What you just had would be what chapter three calls mood swings,” he said with a laugh. “Besides, if you want our daughter to be healthy, you have to make some changes. I drove out to the bookstore last night after dinner and got it. You should read it. Has some good stuff in it. I also got two more. They are in the office.”
“Wow, you are really excited about this aren’t you? Well, you can read them and tell me what they say,” Katie laughed.
“Hey now I can’t read them all. One is especially for mothers. That’s yours,” Mark told her.
“I know,” said Katie. “I was just kidding. Seems like you got those chapter three mood swings too,” Katie laughed and punched Mark in the arm. “Hey, did I miss breakfast?”
Rubbing his arm where Katie hit it, “Yes, I went up to get you but you were sound asleep so I figured you needed your rest and let you be. Sue saved some for you and said she’d warm it up when you were ready. She’s in the kitchen cleaning up. You sit here and read some of this book and I’ll get your breakfast.” Mark went into the kitchen while Katie opened the book. She turned to the chapter about what to eat and not eat. Sure enough Mark was right, no coffee or caffeine during the pregnancy. How was she going to make it? She decided to start making a list of questions to ask the doctor in a couple of weeks. That would be her first one. She went into the office to get some paper and a pen. She wrote down a couple of questions by the time Mark returned with her breakfast. He sat it on the table and told her to come eat. Katie
got up with the book, paper, and pen in hand. She put them on the table and told Mark about the list of questions. “That’s a good idea K. I think I’ll do that too and we can combine the list as needed. Now please eat. Collin will be here in a little while to talk about the house, and we need to come up with ideas before he gets here.” Katie ate and they talked about ideas for the house. Mark wrote them down. They were still sitting at the table throwing out ideas when Collin knocked at the door. Mark greeted him and led him to the big table. He introduced Katie and they all sat down.
“So Mark, you said you wanted to make a deal about a house for that horse. I am not sure that’s a fair trade. Could we talk about adding to it?” Collin asked.
“Well Collin what do you have in mind?” Mark asked.
“First, how much do you think that horse is worth?” Collin asked.
Mark answered, “I looked at his papers this morning. He is a registered Tennessee Walker just over a year old. If I were to sell him out right, he’d probably bring $100,000-$125,000, easily, especially with his training I have given him to show. So for you, I’d give you a break and take $85,000.”
“OK well, the house, depending on plans and options, would probably start at $200,000 because all the work is done by hand. So let’s see the horse, and maybe that black single horse trailer sitting out there, and training and lessons for the horse and my daughter. I figure that should come out about right.”
“Man, you drive a hard bargain. How old is your daughter? Is she going to be the one to use the horse? What is she wanting to do with it.”
”She is 12 and yes, the horse is for her. She wants to do show jumping.”
Mark thought for a minute. Made some calculations and then said, “Ok the horse and the trailer. I’ll need to keep the horse for a few more months to train it to do show jumping. When he is ready, Katie will give her free lessons for one year but after that we’ll charge her regular rate. How does that sound?”
Collin made some calculations. “Sounds great. Now what are your ideas for the house?” They all talked about the house and got a pretty good idea down on paper. When they finalized the plans. Collin said he could start the job in three days. Mark took him out to the land where he and Katie decided to build it. Collin said he would be back the next day to stake out the property and then a couple of days later have his guys come out to pour the foundation. Mark thanked him, shook his hand and Collin left. Mark went back into the house and told Katie the plan. She was excited. Just then she spotted her father coming up the drive. “Wow! That was good timing,” she told Mark. He kissed her and said he needed to get to work. As he left he greeted Katie’s father. They talked for a minute then Mark went to work. “Hey Daddy, glad you finally made it out. How are you?”
“I am good Princess, how are you?”
“I am fine.” They hugged. Katie continued, “You want some coffee or something to eat?” “Some coffee would be great and if you have any of Sue’s wonderful biscuits left, I’d love some of those with gravy.”
“I think you are in luck. I’ll go get it. Just have a seat at the table and I’ll bring it right out.” He sat down at the table while Katie went into the kitchen. She brought him a cup of coffee. “Here you go. Sue is warming up the biscuits and gravy and will bring them right out. So, you just gonna hang out here today?” Katie asked as she sat at the table across from him.
“Well if that is okay with you. I was hoping to spend so time with you and Mark and maybe even learning my way around the ranch. The house is just lonely now, and I need something to do with my days.”
Katie smiled at him as he took a sip of coffee. “Daddy, Doug told us…. Um I mean Doug is staying here for the trial. I am sure he could use some help. That might be better than working outside. It gets awful hot out there. Also that’s a long drive back and forth to the house every night. You know, Mark and I would love for you to come stay with us if you’d like.” He looked at her wondering if she knew something. Sue brought in his biscuits and broke the silence. “Morin’ Mr. Warren. Here you are.” He thanked her and the turned back to Katie. “Sue is a sweet woman. Does she live here on the ranch?” “Yes she has a little room just off the kitchen. We are looking to expand it for her in the next few months. Daddy, did you hear what I said about you staying here?” “Yes Katie, I heard it. I am not sure that is a good idea. While I’d love to be closer to you guys, especially after the baby comes, I know you guys don’t want some old burned out lawyer living here. Besides what would I do with the house?” Katie sighed. She finally decided that she needed to tell her father that she knew about the house.
“Daddy, I know about the house. You have no place to go. Please stay here with us until you figure something out.”
He stared at her. “What? How do you know?”
“It doesn’t matter how I know but I do know. Please Daddy, I can’t stand the thought of you out there somewhere. At least stay until you figure something out.”
He thought for a moment. “Katie, I didn’t want you to find out about losing the house. You have enough to worry about as it is. If I do stay here, I don’t want you to go to any trouble about anything. Just go about your daily routine like I am not even here. Is Mark okay with this?” “Mark is fine with it. And this will be fine. Afterall, you have to earn your keep around here just like everyone else.” Katie laughed and her father smiled.
“Ok but just for a week or so until I can find a place to go.”
“Great, we will give you the second master suite downstairs. We use the one upstairs. The one down here has its own entrance and nice big private bath. We were going to give it to Uncle Doug while he is staying here but he said he preferred the guestroom upstairs because of the morning sun. If you want, I’ll show you where everything is. Come on.” Katie took her father to the room. It was a nice big room just off the living room. It had a fireplace and a huge bathroom. She showed him where he can find everything and where to put things.
“Wow this is great. This house is much bigger than it looks. Is the upstairs master this big?” he asked with a smile.
“Actually, it’s bigger,” Katie said. “We like it better up there. That way breakfast doesn’t wake us up as early. Sue starts cooking about 5:30 and we don’t want to get up quite that early.” “Well, thanks for the warning,” her father chuckled. “I’ll wear a nose plug or something. Katie thank you so much.” He gave Katie a big hug.
“Daddy don’t get all sappy on me now. I have a riding lesson here in a few minutes. You want to come watch?”
“Sure I’d love too. Hey, I need to go shopping later. If I am gonna be staying here, I want to look the part. I mean a ranch is hardly a place for slacks and loafers. Where can I go get some jeans and boots?”
“Tell you what, after lunch Mark and I will take you shopping at our favorite store. They know us pretty well and will give you good deal.” Katie and her father walked outside just as Katie’s student pulled up the drive. “You can stand over here by the fence. Mark will probably be back by here in a little bit. He likes to watch when he can.” Just as Katie went into the riding ring, one of the ranch hands brought the riding horse out of the stable.
“Here you are Mrs. Katie. All ready to go. I adjusted the stirrups for your student’s height. She should feel more comfortable this time.”
She grabbed the reins, “Thanks Hank. You’re a big help.” Her student came skipping into the ring.
“Hey Mr. Hank. You got my horse ready today?”
He smiled at the little girl, “Sure do Mandy. Patches is all cleaned up and ready for you. Have fun and be careful,” she says as he winked at her.
“Thanks Mr. Hanks. Can you stay and watch?”
“I have to go clean his stable while you are riding but if I get done I’ll come watch for a bit.”
Mandy just smiled as she greeted Katie, “Morning Mrs. Katie. I’m ready.” Katie helped Mandy up on the horse and began the lesson. Mandy was only about eight-years-old but learned very quickly. Close to the end of the lesson, Hank came to stand at the fence. Mandy saw him smiled and waved wildly. Katie noticed Mandy not paying attention. “Mandy both hands on the reins please. You don’t want to fall off.”
“Sorry Mrs. Katie.” Mandy just loved it when Hank watched her. Hank sometimes helped Katie with new students, especially if they were young children and needed help staying in the saddle. Hank would walk around beside the horse ready to catch them if they fell off. Hank had worked with Mandy when she first started. She got attached to him and was a little sad when he no longer helped her. Hank really took to her as well and made it a point to come watch her when he could. He always made sure the horse was washed and ready to go for her lesson.
Hank also helped out Mandy’s mother, Karen. She was a single mother who lived on the edge of town. Her husband left right after Mandy was born. When she needed something done around the house or help of any kind, she usually called Hank. They met one day during one of Mandy’s lessons, started talking and instantly hit it off. Some of the guys urge Hank all the time to ask Karen out but he just wouldn’t feel right about doing so. Mandy loved it when Hank came to help because when he finished he usually took extra time to play with her. Hank really liked Mandy and Karen and would love to ask Karen out but was waiting for the perfect opportunity.
Just as Katie is finished the lesson, Karen came up the drive. Hank walked over to greet her. “Hello Karen. Having a good morning?” he asked.
“Yes, Hank,” she replied. “Glad to see you. Hey listen, I got a question for you. I have two tickets to the concert at the arena tonight and need someone to go with. Would you be interested?”
“Oh you don’t want to take me,” he told her.
“Actually, I would like to go with you. I have been looking for an excuse to go somewhere with you and this is perfect since we both really like the group playing,” she smiled. Hank smiled back, thinks for a minute and then says, “Ok I’ll go but only if you let me buy dinner before the concert.”
She smiled almost in a blush, “It’s a deal. The concert starts at 8.”
“Then I’ll pick you up around 5 for dinner. That ok?” he asked.
She smiled, “That would be perfect. I have a friend who agreed to watch Mandy. I’ll take her over there about 4 so I can get ready in peace. You know Mandy would talk my ear off about you if she found out you were coming over.” They continued their conversation as they walked over to the fence to see the last few minutes of Mandy’s lesson. When she was done, Hank helped Mandy into the car then waved goodbye. As he started back into the corral to take the horse back to the stable, Katie asked him, “So what were you and Karen talking about? Looks like you guys had a nice long conversation.”
Hank smiled, “She asked me to go to a concert with her tonight.”
Katie snickered, “I hope you said yes. I told her you would.”
Hank looked at her, “Wait you talked to her about it? You knew? That’s just not right.”
Katie laughed, “Yeah she asked me last week if I thought you would go if she asked and I told her not only did I think you would but that you would buy her dinner as well. Then she swore me to secrecy. So where you going to take her to dinner?”
Hank was puzzled, “How did you know I’d take her to dinner.”
“Cause that’s just the kind of guy you are Hank. So where you taking her?” He thought for a moment, “How about the little Italian place that you and Mark like to go?”
“I think that is perfect. You better make sure you have on your best jeans, shirt and boots.”
“I was actually thinking about dressing up a bit more than that.”
“I don’t think you should. She really likes you in jeans and boots, especially clean shaven and with your Stetson. Afterall, it is a country concert and you’d fit right in.”
Hank smiled, “Ok if that’s what she wants, that’s what she gets. Besides that’s how I feel most comfortable.”
Chapter 33
Hank led the horse back to the stable as Katie talked to her father about what he thought about the lesson. “Pretty cool,” he said “I didn’t know there was so much to riding or that you knew it all. Do you think you could teach me?” Katie smiled, “Sure I could, but you would probably be better off letting Mark teach you. I only do certain types. If you just want a general trail riding cowboy type, that’s his department. Have you seen Mark?”
He looked around, “No I haven’t seen him. Maybe I’ll ask him at lunch if he’ll teach me.”
Katie laughed, “You will defiantly see him at lunch. He doesn’t miss that. It shouldn’t be too much longer. Let’s go in the house and relax.” They walked back into the house and sat on the couch. After a few minutes, Mark came down the stairs. Katie saw him. “What are you doing in here? I thought you were out working.”
“Nah, I had something important to do in here. It’s a surprise.”
“Mark, you know I hate surprises. What are you doing?”
Mark smiled a sheepish smile, “You’ll find out tomorrow. It’s not quite ready. Hey, Mr. Warren. Did you enjoy watching the lesson?”
“Yes I did. I also wanted to know if you would teach me to ride.”
“Sure I would. We can start tomorrow afternoon, when Katie’s surprise is finished,” he replied as he winked at Katie. Just about that time Ms. Sue poked her head out of the kitchen. “Mark could you help me for a second?” Mark told her he would be right there. Mr. Warren spoke up, “You stay here and continue to torture my daughter about the surprise. I’ll go help Ms. Sue.” He smiled as he walked to the kitchen.
“Hey, Ms. Sure. I decided to come help instead of Mark. Is that ok?”
Ms. Sue smiled, “That is just fine. I just need someone to bring me in some wood from out back. The stove is about out and the boys forgot to restock in here this morning.”
“No problem I will get you the best wood out there,” he said with a smile.
“Thank you Mr. Warren. The wood cradle is there next to the door.”
“Please call me John, Ms. Sue,” he said with a smile as he started out the back door. After a few minutes he returned with a cradle of wood. “How much do you need Ms. Sue?”
“Oh about three should cover it.” He left and returned with in two more cradles of wood. “There you are Ms. Sue all stocked up. Need anything else?”
Sue smiled, “Thank you John. Actually, I could use some help setting the table. Are you any good at that?”
He smiled, “Are you kidding, I am the best in the county.”
“Great,” smiled Ms. Sue as she handed John a stack of plates.
They walked out to the table together making small talk. They laughed and talked as they set the table. Ms. Sue really enjoyed his company as she rarely got the chance to talk to someone her own age. Mark and Katie stopped their conversation and just watched the two of them. Finally Katie whispered to Mark, “Looks like we may have a budding romance on our hands.” Mark replied, “Don’t get too excited. They are just making conversation.”
“Mark I haven’t seen my father smile at a women like that since my mother. He has that look.”
“What look?” Mark questioned.
“You know that look that men get around certain women when their heart starts to melt and they get all warm and gooie inside.”
Mark laughed, “What? I never had that look.”
Katie smiled, “Oh yes you did. I saw it several times. Long before you even thought about marrying me.”
Mark looked at her is disbelief, “When?”
Katie thought for a minute. “The first time was that day that Brian first came to the ranch, and I told you I was going to look for a needle in a haystack. When I told you what I meant, you offered to help me; you had that look. I saw it just about every time you looked at me from then on and still do.” Katie leaned over and kissed him. He was surprised to hear that he was giving off signals that early, before he even knew how he felt. Katie told him that it usually happened that way and was sure every man would deny having the look. Their conversation was soon interrupted when Ms. Sue told them lunch was ready as she went out on the porch to ring the bell. Of course Mr. Warren followed her.
As Mark and Katie ate lunch, Katie asked Mark if he would be willing to help her take her father shopping after lunch. He reluctantly agreed but could only be gone a couple of hours because he had something that needed to get done before dinner. The three of them left as soon as Mr. Warren helped Sue clear the lunch dishes. Katie could see this was going to be a regular occurrence. Her father enjoyed helping Sue and Sue enjoyed his company. The whole time they were shopping, Mr. Warren kept asking Katie and Mark questions about Ms. Sue. Before they finished shopping, they all knew these questions were not just polite conversation pieces. Just as they were leaving town, they passed a flower shop. Mr. Warren asked if they could stop. He asked Katie if she knew what Ms. Sue’s favorite flower was. “I think she told me one time that she really liked daisies. “ Mr. Warren hurried into the flower shop and soon came out with a bouquet of daisies. As he climbed into the truck, he asked, “Do you think these are too much?”
Mark and Katie looked at each other. Katie answered, “No, they are great. But I must warn you one of the ranch hands brought her some wild flowers one day and she got upset when they died and he didn’t bring her fresh ones.”
Mr. Warren smiled, “I’ll bring her fresh ones everyday if she wants.”
Katie smiled at her father, “So you and Ms. Sue are getting along great. That’s good to see. I know she gets lonely around the ranch with no one her age to talk to.”
“Yes she and I really hit it off. Do you think you could spare her one night if I wanted to take her out to dinner?”
Katie looked at her father surprised he was moving to the question so fast. “I am sure we can arrange something. Just give me a few days notice.”
“Well, I was thinking about Sunday evening. Would that be okay?”
“If she says yes, it would be great.” They rode in silence as they pulled up the driveway.
As Mr. Warren got out of the truck he said, “I am gonna go in the back door and surprise Ms. Sue. Can you take my stuff to my room for me?”
Katie smiled and said she would. Mr. Warren walked to the back door that led to the kitchen, hid the flowers behind his back, took a deep breath and entered. “Hello, Ms. Sue. Working hard on dinner?”
“Hello, John, yes I am. Did you finding anything on your shopping trip?”
“I did. Maybe I’ll show it off later. So do you think you could take a break for just a second? I have something that I saw in town and just had to bring it for you.”
Sue smiled at him. “You didn’t have to bring me anything, but I do love surprises. What is it?” He presented her the daisies. Excitedly she cried,, “Daisies, my favorite! How’d you know?”
“A man never tells his secrets,” he replied as he helps her retrieve a jar from the shelf for the flowers. “These really pretty up my kitchen. Thank you John,” she said as she set them on the counter beside her. “Well, this kitchen is beautiful as long as you are in it,” he said. “But I have one more thing for you. It isn’t a gift but a question. I was wondering if you would do me the honor of allowing me to take you to dinner on Sunday.”
Sue blushed, “Well I would love to but I’ll have to clear it with Mrs. Katie and Mr. Mark.”
“Already taken care of. They said it was fine with them if you agreed.”
Sue smiled, “Then I’d love to go to dinner with you, John. What time should I be ready?”
“How does 6 sound?”
“That would be great. Thank you. I can’t wait. Would you like to help me set the table for dinner? We still have about an hour but you did such a good job at lunch.” He agreed and they both set the table. No one was in the living room to watch them this time until one of the ranch hands comes in.
“Ms. Sue, have you seen Mark?”
“No I haven’t, Joe. They just got back for town but I don’t know where he went. John, do you know?”
“I know before we left he said something about working on a surprise for Katie but not sure what he meant. Want me to help you look for him?”
“ Well, it’s and emergency. Katie just passed out in the stable. You guys go see if you can do anything and I’ll see if Mark is upstairs.” Sue and John run out the to stable as Joe yelled up stairs for Mark. He came out to the landing to see what Joe needed. Joe hurriedly tells him, “Katie just passed out in the stable. You better come. Jeff is out there and I just sent Ms. Sue and Mr. Warren out.”
“Oh Man! What happened?” Mark cried as he ran down the stairs and out the door. He reached the stable just as Katie is started to wake up. Kneeling down beside her, Mark asked, “Katie are you ok? Jeff, what happened?” Jeff looked at Mark, “She was watering the horses while I cleaned out the stalls. She stopped and said she didn’t feel good and asked if I could finish. Before I can even answer, she hit the ground. I tried to catch her but didn’t make it.” Katie spoke softly, “Mark, what’s wrong what happened? I remember watering and talking to Jeff and then nothing. What’s wrong?”
“Katie you passed out. We’ve got to take you to the hospital. Has anyone called an ambulance?” In the excitement everyone forgot. Then Jeff spoke up. “Come on Mark we’ll just take her in the truck. We can carry her and I’ll drive and you can sit in the back with her. We’ll call the hospital on the way.” Mark picked up Katie to carry her to the truck.
Mr. Warren rushed over to open the door. “Want me to come too?” he asked Mark. “Sure hop in.” Mr. Warren jumped into the front seat of the truck, just as Jeff jumped in the driver’s seat. “We’ll call when we know something,” Jeff said. “Everyone try to get your work done. She’ll be ok.” They rushed to the hospital where Mr. Warren jumped out and opened the back door to the truck. Katie was lying in the back seat with her head in Mark’s lap. The nurses, waiting with a gurney, loaded Katie on it and wheeled her inside. Mark and Mr. Warren were right behind them, as Jeff parked the truck.
The doctors let Mark go in with Katie but asked Mr. Warren and Jeff to stay in the waiting area. They asked Mark what happened, and he retold what Jeff had said to him. He also told them that Katie was pregnant. They asked him if she lost consciousness on the way, and he told them that she had not. They ran several tests on Katie. Finally after about an hour the doctor came in to talk to Mark who told him that Katie fainted because of a vitamin deficiency. He said this could not only be due to the pregnancy but also from working on the ranch and extreme stress. Mark knew Katie defiantly fit that description. The doctor told him that the pre-natal vitamins Katie was taking weren’t keeping up with everything that she was involved in and that Katie was receiving an IV that would help, and as soon as it was finished, she could go home but with restrictions. The doctor made sure Katie heard and agreed to the restrictions. He told them that she had to take it easy for the next few days, meaning no lessons and no working on the ranch. She had to have a strict diet for the next few months and also had to take some new vitamin supplements that he was prescribing. He also told them that he would send to report to Katie’s OB and to follow up with him in a few days. Katie spoke up, “I have an appointment with him on Monday.” The doctor said that was great. He gave them a few more instructions and said a nurse would bring in paper work and that she should be able to leave in about an hour when the IV was finished. Mark left to inform Mr. Warren and Jeff of the good news and then Jeff called the ranch while Mark returned to help Katie with the paperwork. The doctor returned for one last check. “Katie, here is a copy of the diet I want you to follow. Stay on it for at least three months unless your OB tells you otherwise. By the way, who is your OB?”
“It is Dr. Murphy. Is my baby ok?”
“Your baby is fine for now and will be as long as you follow doctor’s orders. Dr. Murphy is a good doctor. He and I went to school together and play golf on occasion. I’ll send him my report first thing in the morning. Looks like your IV is almost done. I’ll get a nurse to come take it out, and you go home and get some rest.” The doctor left and Katie looked at Mark, “Honey, I’m sorry. I didn’t want something like this to happen.”
“K, it’s not your fault. This is just God’s way of telling you to slow down and take it easy.”
The nurse came in to remove Katie’s IV. “Ok Mrs. Dean, your are free to go. Do you have any questions?”
“No, I think we are good. Thank you.”
“You are welcome. Mr. Dean, I will push here out if you’d like to carry her things.”
Jeff had already pulled to truck up. Mr. Warren and Mark helped Katie into the truck. Mark gets in beside. Katie slumped down and laid her head on Mark’s shoulder. He put his arm around her as they rode back to the ranch.
